The Importance of Periodontal Health

Do you brush your teeth twice a day? Do you know if you are using the proper brushing technique? Do you floss every day? If you said “yes” to all of these questions then you are already well on your way to doing what you need to in order to maintain healthy teeth and gums; however, if you could honestly answer “no” to some or all of these questions then we have some work ahead of us. From the office of our Clifton, NJ dentist Dr. Anthony Pinadella and our periodontist Dr. Victor Terranova, here’s how to care for your gums:

Why is periodontal health so important?

The health of your gums is just as important as the health of your teeth. While brushing can certainly keep teeth clean and free from decay, flossing can also protect your gums from infection. Gum disease doesn’t just cause permanent and severe damage to the gums it can also lead to bone damage and tooth loss. Untreated gum disease can cause the gums to recede and shrink enough that teeth become loose.

How do you prevent gum disease?

Maintaining good oral health can also benefit your health in general. So, how do you keep your gums healthy? It’s actually surprisingly easy. Here’s how,

  • Brush teeth for at least two minutes at a time, two times a day
  • Floss teeth once a day
  • Avoid sugar and starches
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet
  • Visit your dentist every six months for cleanings
